Pablo Vargas Lugo: Eclipses for Austin

A video installation by Pablo Vargas Lugo pushes the boundaries between art and sports. "Eclipses for Austin" contains 4 videos that explore solar eclipses as important collective rituals. Participants in the artist's choreographed performance were filmed at a stadium and helped stage 4 solar eclipses that will occur over in Texas over the next 340 years.

American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art includes some the finest works by leading avant-garde American artists of the early 20th century. Do not miss the opportunity to view amazing works by Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth and more. These rarely seen artworks are from America’s oldest public art museum and will now be on view at the Carter! Hans Molzberger: Return/Rückkehr

Return, or Rückkehr as it is said in German, includes four large-scale sculpture installations, as well as a recent body of mixed media works by German artist Hans Molzberger.  His work explores current political events and address various historical, political, and social situations. Upon visiting Port Arthur, Texas after the devastation of Hurricane Ike in September 2008, Molzberger was inspired to create a piece that explores the aftermath of the storm but also the life and death associated with all major storms. Pleasure Island, a sculpture installation, is the result of Molzberger's exploration. It consists of a large, hand-made wooden boat filled with fused-glass birds. Don't miss this show and be on the lookout for Molzberger’s documentary art project, Never Let it Rest! which will be on view at the Houston Holocaust Museum starting April 16.

Robert Pruitt, who came to prominence as a member of Otabenga Jones & Associates and was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial, has a new series of drawings, The Forever People, at Hooks-Epstein Galleries. These portraits of the artist's friends and neighbors investigate misconceptions of black identity and their role in popular media.

A new installation by one of Africa's foremost sculptors, El Anatsui, at the Rice University Art Gallery. Nigerian-based Anatsui manages to preform an alchemical transformation by turning ordinary found and recycled materials into dazzlingly grand installations that completely transmute the space. This is a not to be missed exhibition! 

Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool

Birth of Cool marks the first painting retrospective of Pennsylvania-born Barkley L. Hendricks. His dazzling, life-sized portraits of urban dwellers from the northeast are part of an exhibition that consists of over 50 works from 1964 to the present. Hendrick's compelling works find commonalities with the works contemporary portraitists like Alex Katz and an earlier generation of black painters from Romare Bearden to Beauford Delaney. The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is the final touring stop after traveling to the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY, Santa Monica Museum of Art, CA, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Take a walk on the wild side while waiting for your man and go see Lou Reed's new exhibition of photographs. From the Velvet Underground to his solo career as a multi-disciplinary artist, Reed exhibits his incredible black and white photographs of his travels to Scotland, Big Sur and beyond. Reed has moved away from his documentations in NYC to a more pastoral setting. All shot in digital, Reed's photographs are eerie and mysterious and sure to please. Berlin- the celebrated film adaptation of Lou Reed's darkly-themed album screened Thursdays and Saturdays from Jan. 21 through March 20. Thursday screenings at 5:30 pm and Saturday screenings at 3 pm. The Ballroom's annual video series Art in the Auditorium presents its second installment! Artists working in video and film are organized by Whitechapel Gallery, London which exists as an exhibition within Ballroom Marfa's galleries. Seven participating institutions has selected an artist from their region whose works are screened as part of the program. Ursula Mayer (nominated by Whitechapel Gallery, London); Charly Nijensohn (Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires); Nova Paul (City Gallery, Wellington); Lars Laumann (Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo); Inci Eviner (Istanbul Modern in conjunction with The Institute for the Readjustment of Clocks) and Patrizio Di Massimo (Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Bergamo) are the selected artists this year. Ballroom Marfa has chosen Aïda Ruilova as the representative from North America!
