Karen Mahaffy creates video, sculptural and drawn works in her new exhibition, Persistence of Moment, at Women and Their Work. Mahaffy's ephemeral time-based video works will be on view as well as several sculptures which were inspired by Mahaffy’s recent Research Fulbright to Estonia. An artist panel entitled, The Phenomena of Place, takes place Thursday, August 12 at 7 pm with a conversation between Karen Mahaffy, Megan Crigger, Austin's Public Art Administrator, author Chris Oglesby, artist Chris Sauter and other guest artists.

The 15th Young Latino Artists Exhibition is now on view at the Mexic-Arte Museum! Consensus of Taste is curated by Claudia Zapata who, according to the press release, utilizes Clement Greenberg's concept that suggests there is a “consensus of taste” in which disputed taste eventually is agreed upon by all parties. Featured artists include Jesus Benavente, Candace M. Briceño, Margarita Cabrera, Bobby Dixon, Santiago Forero, Eduardo Xavier Garcia, Ivete Lucas, Randy Muniz, Cruz Ortiz, Matthew Rodriguez, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Abel Saucedo, Vargas-Suarez Universal, David “Shek” Vega, and Jason Villegas!!! The Blanton Museum of Art features an exhibition of over 125 works exploring the artists and ideas introduced in the 19th century working in the mediums of printmaking and drawing. Repartee: 19th-Century Prints and Drawings from The Blanton Collection examines the social and theoretical frameworks for nineteenth-century art making. The Dallas Museum of Arts presents the first U.S. retrospective of the work of Belgian artist Luc Tuymans! This comprehensive presentation of Tuyman's work opened at The Wexner Center for the Arts and then traveled to to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art before making its way over to the DMA. This exhibition was jointly organized by the two museums and spans every phase of Tuyman's career. Eighty paintings from 1978 are featured and are organized in chronological order to highlight the progression of his work. This exhibition is not to be missed so be sure to check it out before September comes around.

The Amon Carter Museum unveils Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, 1920s–50s. This groundbreaking exhibition is the first to bring together South American and U.S. geometric abstraction. Organized by the Newark Museum, the show features 85 works by over 65 abstract artists from Argentina, Brazil, the US, Uruguay and Venezuela, working in a variety of media. Constructive Spirit provides a fresh look at modernism and highlights works by Joaquín Torres-García, Arshile Gorky, Gyula Kosice and Jesús Rafael Soto, to name a few. In conjunction with the exhibition, four short, avant-garde films by Mary Ellen Bute and Dwinell Grant are shown in the museum’s auditorium every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 1-3 pm (except July 4 & 10 + August 8).

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas presents an exhibition of work by George Wentz from July 24 through September 26. In March 2010, the Southeast Texas community lost a beloved friend with the death of this artist, George Wentz. The opening reception takes place on Friday, July 23 to remember Wentz and will include a gallery talk about the artist’s life and work by Andy Coughlan. Forty paintings, drawings, and collages from the 1960s to 2010 are on view in this exhibition titled, Joie de Vivre, derived from a French expression meaning “joy of life or living.” Wentz's gestural and abstract works are reminiscent of the French post-impressionists and the most recent collection of paintings and drawings was donated to the museum.

Women Artists: Selections from the AMSET Permanent Collection continues the summer series of exhibitions from the permanent collection of the museum. This selection of work created by women artists represented in AMSET’s collection includes photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media, textiles, and printmaking. The exhibition consists of forty works created by contemporary women artists either born in Texas or who have spent a majority of their career working in the state. Perspectives 171: Jennifer West is the first solo museum exhibition for this Los Angeles-based artist and is curated by Valerie Cassel Oliver, CAMH curator. Five film projections created between 2008 and 2010 are on view and a limited edition zine, created by the artist, will also accompany the exhibition.

Dance with Camera features art works in film, video, and still photography that shows the ways dance has inspired visual artists to record bodies moving in time and space. Twenty-six artists and filmmakers are highlighted in the exhibition which has been organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, and curated by Jenelle Porter, ICA Curator. The exhibition includes works from the 1960s by Bruces Conner and Nauman along with heavy hitters Mike Kelley and Merce Cunningham. Art League Houston launches the Fall season with the opening of Cockroach Poems, an exhibition of sculpture by 2010 Texas Artist of the Year Joseph Havel. Using text cut from the book The Dream Songs by poet John Berryman, Havel creates a narrative in which a group of collage “poems” are edited by glue-and-text eating cockroaches, randomly altering the work. Don't miss the two-person show featuring recent work by recent Core Fellow Jillian Conrad and clay artist Jeff Forster. Conrad's work created with plywood, concrete, and cardboard reference everyday landscapes while Forster's sculptures are made from reused materials, fired remnants, and photographs of pre-existing sculptures.

Religion is never far from art. A new exhibition, Objects of Devotion, at the Menil, explores this persistent connection. Culled from the museum's permanent collection and featuring many works never before on view, Objects of Devotion exhibits a wide range of devotional objects that exist at the intersection of religion and art. Exhibition curator Kristina Van Dyke presents approximately 32 objects, from a ninth century Mayan drinking vessel, to Medieval shrine figures of saints, that comment upon our past and present human need for art and religion that helps guide us through uncertainty.

Artpace's new round of artists in their International Artist-In-Residence Program offers a new exhibition with New Works: 10.2. Curated by Patrick Charpenel, an independent curator from Guadalajara, Mexico, this exhibition includes the work of Jamal Cyrus (shown) of Houston, Corey McCorkle from New York, and Monika Sosnowska of Warsaw, Poland. Don't miss Cyrus' Pride Record series, which tells a story of an independent record label which becomes a target of the FBI's Counterintelligence Program. McCorkle's projects explore ideas of isolation and the ideals of Utopia while Sosnowska creates architecturally influenced sculptures and installations.

Curated by Art Depot 's owner Ryder Richards, Construct is a group exhibition featuring Nathan Green, Thor Johnson, Jeff Mueller, and Monica Vidal (shown). Green, an Austin resident and member of the Austin based art collective Okay Mountain, showcases his "painting conglomerates" that skew and subvert traditional exhibition techniques. Johnson, a Dallas based artist, creates complex patterning and Mandala based videos while Mueller, a Chicago resident, utilizes appropriated text intermingled with visual images. Vidal, a Houston resident, will exhibit work based on a tumor removal she experienced in 2007.

K Space Contemporary presents the exhibition OPP: Other People’s Projections, a video installation showcasing works from John Aåsp, Christopher Lowther, John Medina, Monica Panzarino, and David Politzer. Aåsp focuses on video as past photographic practice, while Lowther uses space and video projection to reference stereotypes of masculinity in Hollywood film. Medina incorporates music, performance, installation, video, sculpture and printmaking and Panzarino creates single-channel video and sound. Sobel uses ceramics, video, performance, found objects, and mixed media in a sculptural, installation environment while Politzer works with mixed media as installation art.

Hyper-real sculptor, Carole Feuerman has created figurative sculpture, predominantly of women since the 1980’s. Her work is now featured in the exhibition, Earth Water Air Fire, at The El Paso Museum of Art, with fifty-one sculptural works in oil painted resin, cast marble, and bronze from the 1980’s, the 1990’s and the first decade of the 21st Century. Feuerman work recalls classical sculpture, French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the aesthetics of Surrealism. A booksigning takes place Sunday, August 15 from 3:30-4:30 pm following the opening reception.
