I was once at a lecture by Robert Irwin who recalled his early years as a painter. He described how he debated just those details that you mentioned, as well as how the sides of his paintings should look. Finally, he came to this principle: “If I see it, it exists” and therefore was legitimately within his concerns as an artist.
