Drawings!: My Favorites From Houston 2012

by Rachel Hooper December 29, 2012

There has been a lot of excitement about painting in Houston this year, with Aaron Parazette’s In Plain Sight at McClain Gallery and a big exhibition planned for the CAMH’s 65th anniversary. But what about good old drawing? Often more humble and imaginatively evocative than painting, there have been some outstanding drawings shown in Houston this year. My favorite artworks in 2012 have been made simply by putting pencil or pen to paper. Some of H-Town’s most illustrious artists, such as Mark Lombardi and Robyn O’Neil, have pushed drawing in new and exciting directions. It seems that artists are continuing to explore the artistic possibilities of what may be the most ancient form of artmaking. Here are a few highlights of drawings I have seen this past year:

Eric Zimmerman at Art Palace

Laura Lark at Devin Borden

Debra Barrera at Moody Gallery

Robert Pruitt at Galveston Arts Center

Michael Bise on Glasstire

Clarence Chun at Front Gallery

Mark Ponder at UNIT, Gallery Sonja Roesch

Ariane Roesch at Redbud Gallery

William Witte at Box 13 Artspace

Kia Neill at 4411 Montrose (with Box 13 artists) and Linda Darke Gallery

Carl Suddath at Inman Gallery
