Free Art Lawyers Proliferate: TALA Opens Austin Office

Alissa McCain

Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA) has opened a new central Texas office in Austin, embedded in the Austin Creative Alliance (ACA) headquarters. Alissa McCain, ACA’s program director will put on another hat as TALA’s new central Texas program director.

TALA’s pro bono legal and accounting services are offered to artists and arts non-profits in all creative disciplines, including visual arts, music, theater, dance, film, and writing. Austin has not had a pro bono referral organization for legal or accounting services for artists since 2000, though TALA has provided statewide services since 1979.

  1. Dear Sir/Madam,

Could you please advice me if I have grounds to sue a Gallery that sold my art works worth close to a million Dollars, for an outstanding amount I owe to the Gallery – for the show I had organised. I was owing a Gallery $500.But they sold all my works – worth atleast a million Dollars. All this happens behind my back as I arranged and communicated regularly with the Gallery owner that never even once threatened or demanded his money. He was happy with the arrangement until when I told him I want to pay for works- his answer was he doesn’t know me.

Your response in this regard will be highly appreciated.

If possible can you keep this query private and not publish it in your site: atleast until court proceeding.

    Thanking you,

    Ursula.
