Houston’s New Lyceum

by Bill Davenport September 9, 2009

In 1854 the Houston Lyceum began holding weekly debates in the Harris County Courthouse on hot topics like “is wealth more to be desired than mental culture?” and “are works of art more pleasing to the eye than works of nature?" Two teams of three would debate opposing viewpoints, arriving at a decision by the end of the evening. Artist/curator Andrea Grover is reviving a few of these evenings for the Contemporary Arts Museum’s No Zoning show. Dr. Mike Fain, of the University of Houston Forensic Society (the linguistic kind, not the police lab) and former coach of the Rice University speech and debate team will present Eloquence on September 10, 6:30 p.m. FREE
