Wooly mammoths never forget, either

by Rainey Knudson January 23, 2007

Speaking of jewelry, a funny little snafu at Houston's Peel Gallery: they sent out a newsletter featuring scrimshawed ivory jewelry by Jessica Kagan Cushman,
stating that the material was imported to the US prior to the 1989 ban
on ivory trade. The entire thing would have slipped our notice had not
a second email arrived stating it was actually mammoth ivory
coming from animals "that died of natural causes over 10,000 years
ago." Unless, of course, they were killed by cavemen. Anyhoo. Thank
goodness Peel is carbon-14 dating all its products.
