The Mid-America Arts Alliance, in partnership with other U.S. Regional Arts Organizations, has opened applications for a new grant initiative supporting traditional arts rooted in communities of color.
Walking Together: Investing in Folklife in Communities of Color is open to artists and community organizations, including nonprofits, local and tribal governments, businesses, and more. Grants for artists will be in the amount of $15,000 and organizations will receive $50,000.
In a press release, M-AAA defined folk and traditional arts as “forms of expression and knowledge deeply rooted in local histories that are often undervalued or ignored by larger institutions.” It went on to speak of the benefits of these cultural practices, noting that they have a positive effect on the health and wellness of communities.
Interested artists and organizations should submit a self-nomination form, which is due Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Selected finalists will complete a round two application between June 5 and July 21.
