Urban Theater: New York Art in the 1980s

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

September 21 - January 4, 2015

A who's who of the Reganomics decade, including Laurie Anderson, Basquiat, Bleckner, Francesco Clemente, Eric Fischl, Nan Goldin, JPeter Halley, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Koons, Kruger, Sherrie Levine, Mapplethorpe, Allan McCollum, Richard Prince, David Salle, Kenny Scharf, Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, Warhol, Christopher Wool and others. This is going to be fascinating, and there's a ton of programming around this show too--although the Modern is mysteriously not screening the seminal documentary Downtown 81, they've nonetheless got several of the artists involved coming in for Tuesday night lectures during the fall. Not To Be Missed.

Austin

Do Ho Suh

The Contemporary Austin

September 20 - January 11, 2015

Light box objects, a recreated golden fishing net made from tiny human figures, and one of Suh's signature architectural interiors made from translucent scrim material. Let's see what Suh can do!

Francesca Fuchs: Again Once More

The University Galleries at Texas State University | Joann Cole Mitte Building

September 23 - October 19, 2014

The Houston-based Fuchs does a neat trick in her signature paintings of other images: she at once creates an austere distance from the original pictures (the washed-out pastel palette; the insistently sketchy style), while also tapping into the sentiment (sometimes touching, sometimes maudlin), of the originals.
