“Jonas Criscoe and Mai Gutierrez in partnership with the City of Austin’s Arts in Public Places program are proud to present the unveiling ceremony for La Silla Del Sol, a collaboration between Criscoe and Gutierrez for the 2021 TEMPO Program. Deriving inspiration from Mesoamerican architecture, La Silla Del Sol provides a shaded nook for library visitors to relax and spend some time reflecting upon their day, the colors of the sunrise and sunset, and their position within the solar system. This event is free and open to the public and will feature a live musical performance by Mariachi Cielo Azul and light refreshments provided by Qué Sazón.
Jonas Criscoe is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States, most notably the International Print Center in New York and the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Criscoe has also been featured in various art publications, Including Art Lies and New American Painting and has been a Jerome Fellow at the Highpoint Center for Printmaking as well as a West Prize acquisition recipient. A native of Austin, Texas, he received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and the University of Texas at Austin, and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently, he is on the Faculty at Austin Community College and the Art School at The Contemporary Austin, and is a founding member of ICOSA. An artist-run space and collective located on the East side of Austin, Tx.
Mai Gutierrez is a multi-disciplinary architectural designer and artist living in Austin, TX. She earned her BFA and Masters in Architecture from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, she sources her inspiration from architecture and nature by using natural elements in her work such as stone, wood and metal labored to display an architectural aesthetic. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Mexico, and was awarded a yearlong residency with Jorge Elizondo in Monterrey. Her current practice consists of architectural and interior design services, as well as sculpture and public art.”
