July 10 - 17, 2021
From Odyssey Studios:
“Amygdala Hijack is a series of three performances by Gibson Regester documenting the chronological timeline of experiencing abuse within a queer romantic relationship. The set consists of Knockout on July 10, Deathblow on July 11, and Brainwash on July 17, following the path of dissonant emotions and evolutions that true healing takes.
Knockout
In Knockout, Gibson embodies a fighter in boxing gloves, punching themselves repeatedly. They eventually dip their gloves in pink paint, violently covering a portion of their body with it. The fight does not have a clear winner, and ends in exhaustion.
Knockout is hating yourself without knowing why. Societal pressure, abusive manipulation from a lover, and self doubt obscure themselves as causes, manifesting in frustration and self hatred.
Deathblow
Gibson lays on the ground surrounded by organically shaped pink and grey felt pieces. The performance is cyclical, Gibson rising and sticking felt to their body when the music starts, and collapsing to the ground when it stops. These actions mimic failed attempts to salvage a toxic and abusive relationship, explicitly unpacking the abuse that Knockout skirts around.
Brainwash
Sitting behind a bathroom sink, Gibson places a pink bar of soap in their mouth and screams, confronting moments in which they have been punished or punished themselves. In allowing their hijacked brain the violent verbalizations suppressed during a freeze response, they attempt to cleanse their bodymind of trauma in a detergent catharsis. “
