“Modern photography has given the masses the ability to create images for pleasure and for the documentation of their lives and the world. Although the technology has changed, the concepts that guide classic portraiture have changed only a little.
Whether you are an artist skilled in the use of physical mediums like brushes and paints, or a photographer using the most modern of digital technologies, understanding light is still key.
The masters of the Dutch Golden Age (which spanned basically the 17th century) saw the emergence of artists like Vermeer and Rembrandt. Personally, I have always been drawn to the portrait work of both of the artists. Vermeer’s “Girl with the Pearl Earring” and Rembrandt’s self portraits inspired me to research their lighting styles and how I could emulate the “look” photographically.
This exhibit, “Portraits” is my attempt to pay homage to some of the old masters.”
