The first retrospective of Motley’s paintings in two decades. He is not very well-known, perhaps because his most important works don’t come to auction very often and are mostly still in private collections. Motley lived 1891 – 1981, and saw many of the most important movements and geographical locations of his day, from Jazz Age Paris to 1950s Mexico. He’s known for his colorful party scenes, but this exhibition also features what is perhaps his most important body of work: his portraits of women of a variety of ages.
