William P. Hobby Airport Civic Art Commission: Call for Artists

On
behalf of the Houston Airport System, the Houston Arts Alliance is
seeking to establish a pre-qualified pool of professional artists for
consideration for a cultural gateway or landmark public art project
located at William P. Hobby Airport. This commission is open to
practicing, professional artists residing in Texas and Texas-adjacent
states (OK, NM, and LA).

Artists are encouraged to use a variety
of artistic approaches and media as well as varying levels of
experience with public art to apply. We are searching for an
experienced artist or artist team to create an artwork at a location
determined by HAA and HAS on the airport grounds that will signify a
key entry point into the City of Houston from Hobby. Purchase of an
existing work, with involvement by the artist for siting and lighting,
will be considered. High aesthetic merit and a demonstrated ability to
execute large-scale work unique to the City of Houston will be major
considerations in the decision-making process.

The total project
budget (including but not limited to design fee, engineering, site
preparation, concrete pads, insurance, transportation, travel,
materials and studio administration) is $440,000.

The application deadline is Monday, December 1, 2008. Application is available through CaFE; www.callforentry.org,
an on-line application system for calls for entry. There is no charge
to artists for using CaFE. If you are a first time user of CaFE, please
allow adequate time to learn the use of this system.

The artist
or artist team must have the proven ability to adhere to a compressed
timeline. It is anticipated that the artist will be contracted by
January 31, 2009 and groundbreaking will take place September 2009. The
project is anticipated to be complete by December 2009.
