From St. John’s Episcopal School:
“The fourteenth annual exhibition of photographs by W.W. (Bill) Caruth III will open on Thursday, April 18, and will be on display at St. John’s Episcopal School through Friday, May 31. This exclusive exhibition explores the life and culture of Bhutan, a mountainous country in South Asia situated in the Eastern Himalayas, situated between China and India. Exploring Bhutan and Bangkok through the Lens of William Caruth is curated by St. John’s Art Teachers and Artists in Residence Martin Delabano and Denise Brown. The exhibition is free and open to the community by appointment to view and attend.
Civic leader, philanthropist, lecturer, and storyteller Bill Caruth and his wife, Minnie, have dedicated their lives to exploring the world, immersing themselves in wholly unique experiences, and learning about cultures and people vastly different from themselves. From their extensive journeys, they share a vivid pictoral history to bring their explorations to life for students and teachers. As a historian and lifelong learner, Bill Caruth has sought ways to remain engaged in education and share his experiences outside of the classroom with students.
After visiting St. John’s in 2007, the Caruths were impressed by the School’s well-rounded academic program that concentrates on both the humanities as well as in the artrs and sciences. As a result, they selected St. John’s as the site for their first visual exhibition: China: A Personal View. Except for the years at the height of the pandemic, annual photographic exhibitions have mesmerized the St. John’s community and have made a definitive and transformative impact on students and teachers’ understanding of world cultures through this expressive art of photography.
Through his lens, Caruth seeks to inspire children to create a connection with people and cultures who are different from what they readily know. He has masterfully captured the energy and enthusiasm for traditions and celebrations around the world and brings back a vivid understanding of ways of daily life. Even though he has traveled to dozens of countries throughout his life, he is hardpressed to name a favorite. He notes, “I can’t tell you my favorite place because I haven’t been to all of them yet.”
Head of School Meshea Matthews reflects, “We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to partner with Bill and Minnie on this introspective exploration of Bhutan and provide our students with an up-close and first-hand viewing that aligns with our mission and purpose. As a result of Bill’s masterful storytelling, our students have a broader understanding of what life is like in Bhutan through his evocative photographs.”
