From landSPACE:
“Doug Welsh is pleased to present leftovers, a group exhibition featuring work by Ian Gerson, Alex Larsen, Gabriel Martinez, Devin T. Mays, Ben Peterson, and Patrick Renner at landSPACE : a kunsthalle. leftovers weaves together the work of six Houston-based artists who collect, reclaim and transform refuse. Though working with a broad range of processes and found materials, this group of artists share a visual language of repetition, rhythm, color, texture, and pattern. Recurring themes throughout the exhibition include tenderness, politics, way finding, and precarity. The exhibition opens on April 7 with a reception from 1–4 pm and will be on view through May 25.
Welsh writes – “I come from a family that values proper refrigerator management. We don’t overstock our fridges, we use what we have, and we transform our leftovers into unrepeatable yet delicious meals. Most importantly, we limit our food waste. Inherited from my mom and Nana, this domestic strategy encompasses mindfulness, thriftiness, sustainability, adaptability and creativity. These same principles are vital to the artists in this exhibition. Gerson investigates how the trans experience can be a model for survival, both internally and externally, creating weavings with waste culled from bayous and water systems. • Using trash wood left by the side of the road, and without altering the surface or the color of the material, Renner creates architectural structures that embrace adaptability, risk, and randomness as tools for navigating life. • Sourcing garments produced by the exploitation of the global south while moving through the city, Martinez creates quilted paintings that expose the injustice and inequality disproportionately affecting working class People of Color. • Peterson recycles and repurposes slough from the process of fabricating larger ceramic forms, creating tiles and functional vessels that are influenced by architecture, science fiction and the Nevada desert. • Inspired by the creation and erosion of industry, Larsen sources and transforms scrap material for intimate sculptures and large public works. • Known for performance and sculptural interventions using found materials and vacant spaces, Mays presents a series of new films made with leftover footage accrued over the years. The artists in leftovers collect discarded and cast off materials, embracing sustainability and adaptability as methods for transformation.””
