From Mercury Project Gallery:
Pedro Morales’ work delves into the realms of perception and reality, prompting the viewers to contemplate the seen versus the unseen, the known versus the unknown, reality versus the real what is understood and what is not understood. His work serves as a pause button for the mind, encouraging moments of reflection on profound possibilities. His invitation to look further, to look beyond creates a sense of wonder and curiosity. Pedro’s unique ability to capture elusive elements of light and space are intriguing and thought provoking. The use of a variety of materials used to convey these images and ideas coupled with his depth of creativity as well as understanding of these concepts/theories/teachings is what draws the viewer in. As a person that practices Buddhism, which is rooted deeply in the belief that everything in life is impermanent and in a state of constant change. His work reflects those teachings. Whether it’s his use of reflective tape to demonstrate the light we all have with in us, or paint on canvas to show the building blocks of a ray of light, or to re-think space as not what is merely occupied by an object but what surrounds the object, or his use of lace paper which delicately illustrates the beautiful shadows on the moon, they all become the natural agents that stimulate a more thoughtful use of sense of sight in the viewer. One must stop and be still inside oneself to see this. Pedro’s work encourages viewers to leave their prejudices of perception at the door and look deeper, look beyond, which can be both moving and inspiring, the thought of something greater than oneself, ultimately creates a sense of hope.
As a multidisciplinary artist with a background in architecture and Buddhism I produce work that is related to these practices. The creative process could begin spontaneously with how to use found material or conceptually with the search for material to communicate meaning.
My work explores the potential of a variety of materials to create experiences which are symbolic of truth or represent a glimmer of the characteristic known as wisdom. The intention of the work is to stop the discursive mind of the observer and generate a moment of clarity and awareness that produces an openness in consciousness like that of a child full of curiosity and wonder.
