From Hyde Park Bar & Grill:
“Marti Somers achieves rich surfaces in her paintings by building layers of paint on birch panels and then scraping, sanding, drawing and glazing until images emerge to tell their story. Discovering what lies between the layers is what ultimately draws you in. “As a visual artist, I hope to bring you into my world of storytelling. The search for peace and beauty, the fragility of nature juxtaposed against modern life, the human form in balance with others and, in the face of an often foreboding sky, abundant hope.”
A native Californian, Somers received a BFA at the University of Hawaii. She returned to California and worked as a graphic designer and illustrator at Stanford University. She went on to build a partnership with her Stanford colleagues and opened Artefact Design, a woman-owned, full-service design studio in Palo Alto, California. Somers achieved national recognition as an award-winning illustrator, paving her path as a visual artist. In 2001, she embarked on a full-time painting career and opened Studio Believe.
Somers’ work is represented in galleries nationally and collected globally. In a career spanning more than two decades, Somers has enjoyed representation in fine art galleries across the country including Sacramento, Palo Alto, San Francisco and St. Helena, California; Denver, Santa Fe, Dallas, Chicago and Hopewell, New Jersey.
Somers and her husband, Mike McCarthy, split their time between San Carlos, California and Austin, Texas. Her latest body of work is inspired by her experiences in Austin and pays tribute to the songs and songwriters of her generation.”
