November 18 - December 22, 2023
From Erin Cluley Gallery:
“ERIN CLULEY GALLERY is pleased to announce Ripples – an exhibition of new work by Dallas-based painter Anna Membrino. The exhibition will be on view November 18th through December 23rd, 2023, at the gallery’s main location, 150 Manufacturing Street, Suite 210. An opening reception will be held Saturday, November 18th from 4 – 7 PM. The gallery is open weekly Wednesday through Saturday, 12 – 5 PM and by appointment.
Anna Membrino’s artistic style has developed astride the art historical traditions of abstract painting and landscapes. For more than a decade, the Dallas-based painter has refined her interdisciplinary application of painting, three-dimensional design, and the natural environment: these elements contribute to Membrino’s large-scale, surreal landscapes and still lifes. Ripples presents a series of new experimental paintings where Membrino builds up gauzy layers of color and pattern as to create a ghost-like effect: overlapping textures and multiple light sources destabilize viewer’s perceptions of the work. Complicating her usually clean, yet detailed style, the artist’s new paintings showcase her mastery of color, composition, and light.
Membrino devises her compositions through a lengthy preparation process. She begins by staging 3D-printed models which recall natural monuments like mesas, mountains, and boulders: interspersed throughout these artificial miniatures are living elements, like leaves and branches, chosen by the artist. Once satisfied with her scene design, Membrino adds lighting for perspective and captures them with a digital camera. The effect to which Membrino’s paintings complicate foreground/background relations and create surreal landscapes is owed to the artists hands-on approach to her craft. In Ripples, the artist adapts her method to more experimental compositions that invoke a spectral mood.
The artist’s newest body of work makes bold formal steps while staying focused on conceptual themes Membrino has explored in previous work. Wave No. 2, a predominantly red work with curved rib-like lines suggesting the underside of a leaf, demonstrates her new experiments with light and pattern. In this piece, Membrino has built up layers of semi-transparent paint and resin to create the illusion of depth: like the sets she builds, Membrino is able to manipulate her materials to confuse and surprise viewers.
Ripples will be Anna Membrino’s third solo exhibition with Erin Cluley Gallery.
Membrino’s first solo exhibition with the gallery was in 2017.”
