“Artist and mother, Rachel Wiley-Janota spends most of her time working from her studio on the Texas Gulf Coast with her two young sons and husband. She is known for her Gulf Coast landscapes, with her focus on local salt marshes and clouded skies, as she often views from her car or kayak. Wiley-Janota divides her time between art-making and motherhood, traveling together to paint and explore, from the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico to the deserts and mountains of West Texas.
This year they drove back from Oregon to Texas together and spent days on the road taking polaroids in the desert towns of Nevada and New Mexico. Her new show of mixed media paintings celebrates the sky over the places that renew the spirit for both the artist and many others. Open skies painted from both deserts and deserted coastlines, combining the vintage aesthetics of lost motels, weathered storms, and forgotten places, all captured from the roads connecting them. The new works have a dreamlike quality to them, blending together layers of paint and memories, honoring both past and present while preserving moments in time.”
