September 29 - December 6, 2023
From Cain Gallery:
“South Texas is set to witness a powerful celebration of the life and indelible work of Gloria E. Anzaldúa (1942 – 2004), the influential Chicana feminist and cultural theorist, through an immersive visual art exhibition that promises to captivate hearts and minds. Titled “Now Let Us Shift,” this exhibition presented in Del Mar College’s Art Gallery opens its doors to the public on September 29, and will run through December 6, 2023.
From stirring paintings depicting borderland landscapes to thought-provoking mixed-media installations that challenge societal norms, this one-of-a-kind exhibition will feature a diverse collection of artworks in dialogue with Anzaldúa’s impactful writings on the US-Mexico border. Visitors are invited to experience her ideas on gender, nature, spirituality and the family through the lens of 20 talented artists, including Franceska Alvarado, Millicent Alvarado, Julia Arredondo, Liene Bosquê, Alexandria Canchola, Maclovio Cantu IV, Josie del Castillo, Lisette Chavez, Lauren Moya Ford, Leticia Ernestina Gomez, Rigoberto A. González, Marcelina Gonzalez, Carlos Israel Villarreal, Ricardo Vicente Jose Ruiz, Omar González, Veronica Ortuño, Gina Gwen Palacios, Alexis M. Ramos, Mayra Zamora, and Grace Zuñiga.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a stimulating panel discussion featuring artists from the show is scheduled to take place on September 29, 5 to 6pm, in the Bartlett Theater, just before the Opening Reception. This panel, titled “Voices from the Borderlands: Art, Activism, and Identity,” brings together four exceptional creators to share their perspectives on art-making, Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s legacy and their own professional journey through the arts industry:
- Gina Gwen Palacios, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the School of Art and Design, University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).
- Rigoberto A. González, Lecturer in Painting at UTRGV.
- Grace Zuniga, Director of the Houston Arts Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
- Lauren Moya Ford, artist and art critic for Hyperallergic, an online arts magazine.
Following the thought-provoking panel, attendees can look forward to joining us at the highly-anticipated Opening Reception on September 29, 6 to 8pm, in the Fine Art Building. The reception will be a night of artistic revelry, complete with delectable snacks, refreshing beverages, and a cash bar, providing the perfect backdrop for fostering connections and furthering discussions inspired by the powerful artworks on display.
Coinciding with 2023’s Hispanic Heritage Month, the Art & Drama Department is honored to host this exceptional showcase recognizing Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s pivotal role in shaping contemporary Latinx Studies and shedding light on the experiences of marginalized communities. Anzaldúa’s publications include This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color (1981); Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987); and Light in the Dark/Luz en lo Oscuro: Rewriting Identity, Spirituality, Reality (2015). As visitors walk through the exhibit, they will bear witness to the legacy of a visionary scholar whose passion for justice and inclusivity continues to resonate, inspire, and break down boundaries. As Dr. Benjamin Ogrodnik, Assistant Professor of Art and Gallery Director at Del Mar College, says: “Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to engage with the life and work of a true trailblazer!”
