From Lone Gallery:
“Bruce Lee Webb (b. 1966) is a dealer of americana and oddities, a notable Oddfellow, a Mason, a historian, a writer, and treasured Texas artist. His painting style draws inspiration from his home in West Texas, hobo lore, and American folk art. Over the past 8 years {neighborhood} + Lone Gallery have celebrated Webb’s work, and we are always extremely proud to welcome this amazing artist back to our space. This new exhibition is far beyond anything of Webb’s that we have ever presented and will be an incredible display of his most recent works. Bruce Lee Webb grew up in Dallas, Texas where in the 1980’s he discovered skateboarding, punk rock and art as expression. Webb married his wife Julie at the age of 20 and the Webss’s began their Gallery in 1987. The Webb Gallery is world renown for specializing in outsider art and the artifacts of secret societies. The collection, which overflows with curiosities, has gained an international following because of the strength behind its curation and its personality. Currently, Bruce Lee Webb works every day, and his paintings are like journal entries. “I use my art as a memory vessel for myself and to expose others in a random way to things I am interested in and fascinated by. “I’ve been creating art since I was a teenager,” says Webb. “I first got into it back in the ’80s, listening to punk rock. You’d just get your dad’s old tee shirt and draw over it with a Sharpie.” It was that kind of D.I.Y. re-creation that formed Webb’s artistic ethos of taking the world’s discarded items and giving them a new purpose. This current exhibition utilizes scrapbooks from the early 1900s and feed bags from farms across the United States. Webb takes a brush to the pages and reworks them into quirkily beautiful storybooks. “Old things have a certain spirit or energy to them,” he says, with a wistful sense of eagerness, “I can’t stand a blank piece of white paper.””
