From Front Gallery:
“The body of work for Relics was formed around Garrett’s upbringing in Arizona. He wanted to create organisms, portals, mirrors and vessels influenced by the textures, topology, vernacular architecture, archaeology, symbology, animal life and colors of the desert. The process begins with drawings, where marks begin to coagulate into organs or networks of connections and they slowly become bodily or structural. Later through material experimentation, he was able to mimic the surface of an adobe wall or a specific petroglyph he’s often seen by embedding things like limestone, gravel and sand. Collectively these works occupy the same ecosystem, with each forming its own visual characteristics. Referencing the systems and cultures he’s interacted with creates vessels that hold meaning. Though the work is a summary of my filtered memory, the hope is for these forms to eventually feel inherently familiar for the viewer.”
