From Sicardi Ayers Bacino:
“Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino is pleased to present Carlos Cruz-Diez: A Legacy in Color in our main gallery. The exhibition will feature three large-scale Physichromies, each from different periods, representing Cruz-Diez’s ever-expanding investigation of color. In addition, we will host screenings of Free Color, directed by Alberto Arvelo, in our upstairs project room. Exhibition text written by Joel Bracho Ghersi accompanies the exhibition.
Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, August 31, from 6-8 pm.
Carlos Cruz-Diez set out to challenge viewers’ traditional understanding of fine art. He searched for what he called “a new starting point” and to create work that had never been seen before. After studying the Bauhaus and other European avant-gardes at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas in Caracas, Venezuela, Cruz-Diez embarked upon his first abstract project. In 1959, the artist would create his first Physichromie—translated as physical color. This marked the beginning of a nearly six decades-long experiment into the infinite possibilities that color offers.
A Legacy in Color, celebrating one hundred years since Carlos Cruz-Diez’s birth, is Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino’s seventh solo exhibition of the master artist. This presentation reflects the gallery’s longstanding relationship with Cruz-Diez and the numerous commissions, projects, and works realized together over the past twenty years.
Carlos Cruz-Diez’s works are represented in numerous major collections, including Centre National d’Art Contemporain Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Collection of Latin American Art, University of Essex, England; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX, USA; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Bogotá, Colombia; Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin, Colombia; Museo de Arte Moderno, “La Tertulia,” Cali, Colombia; Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas, Venezuela; Museo de la Solidaridad, Salvador Allende, Santiago de Chile; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Museum für Konkrete Kunst, Ingolstadt, Germany; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), Houston, TX, USA; Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, NY, USA; Museum of Modern Art, Sydney, Australia; Palm Springs Desert Museum, Palm Springs, CA, USA; Tate Gallery, London, UK and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK.”
