Gigi Mills: Monte and Other Stories

“William Campbell Gallery (WCG) is pleased to debut painter Gigi Mills, an artist new to the gallery as well as to the Texas art scene. WCG will open her solo exhibition, Monte and Other Stories, on FWADA Fall Gallery Night, Saturday, September 9, 2023.The exhibition will feature figurative paintings characteristic of Mills’ unique approach and ability to capture the interplay between elusive, anonymous figures and negative space. Mills channels her lived experiences into highly relatable scenes that invite the viewer to reflect on their own lives and journeys.

For Mills, the color palette is paramount. She hopes viewers will experience the colors as emotion. Mills says of her technique, “Color carries emotion for us. Because I use oils, the oils affect light. If you are putting gesso on correctly, then there may be orange and then there may be fourteen, five, or six layers of colors on top of that; but when the light hits the gesso and then bounces back at the eye it carries all of the colors with it. Therefore, if you are not aware that you are seeing that first orange, you feel it. That is what I believe.”

Mills received her BA in Theater from the College of Santa Fe and received her MA in Choreography from the University of New Mexico. Her background in choreography informs her work. Reflecting on her time with dance, Mills states that she was more interested in the negative space between and around the body than the body itself.

Gallery Director, Anne Kelly Lewis says, “We are thrilled to bring Gigi’s work to Fort Worth. Her work for me is highly emotional and can bring out our own internal stories. They really have more layers than what the apparent narrative may be; the layers of color and her entire painterly approach allow the viewer to have a reflective experience.”

Mills actively created new work specifically for this exhibition. Gigi Mills has shown her work in over 40 exhibitions since 2004, including shows in San Francisco, CA; Santa Fe, NM; New Orleans, LA and in New York, NY.

The exhibition’s opening reception will take place on September 9, 2023, from 12 PM – 9 PM at 4935 Byers Ave, Fort Worth Texas, 76107. The show will run through November 11, 2023. EXHIBITION: Gigi Mills | Solo Debut | Monte and Other Stories

ABOUT THE GALLERY

Founded in 1974 by Bill and Pam Campbell, William Campbell Gallery (WCG) exhibits contemporary art in a variety of media, including paintings, works on paper, mixed-media construction, photography, prints, ceramics, and sculpture. The Gallery exhibits internationally recognized artists, along with new and emerging talent, and continues to nurture an awareness and appreciation of the exciting diversity found in contemporary art as it has over the past forty-nine years.

The Gallery announced its new ownership in December of 2020 to the Fort Worth Contemporary Art Partners (FWCAP), which includes Tim and Misty Locke, Jadz Pate, Clayton Snodgrass, and J.W. and Andrea Wilson. In March 2022, a second gallery location was opened to feature additional works. In February 2023 the Gallery announced its new Director, Anne Kelly Lewis.
