From the Munday Library at St. Edwards University:
“The Munday Library, in partnership with the Department of Visual Studies, will launch an exhibition celebrating the creative work and legacy of Professor Emeritus Walle Conoly, 1936-2022. Conoly served on the faculty at St. Edward’s University for 48 years where the much-loved professor was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus upon retiring. He began his long career at St. Edward’s in 1965 by creating the studio art program and teaching courses in Art History, Color Theory, Design, Drawing and Painting. At St. Edward’s, he served as Art Area Coordinator from 1965 to 2001, and helped guide and grow the program from two full time art faculty to the current Visual Studies program with 12 full time faculty.
Conoly received his Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico. He studied with Charles Umlauf, and was a master draftsman and teacher of life drawing, anatomy for artists, and color theory. As an artist, he produced many solo exhibitions and group exhibitions locally and internationally, with numerous collectors acquiring his drawings and paintings. He is well known in Texas for his book illustrations, many representing themes related to Texas history.
This exhibit features a collection of drawings and paintings which span many decades. His love of observational drawing is visible in both his studies and in his imaginative and abstracted paintings. Conoly was rarely seen on campus without a pencil in hand, sketching continually on any bits of paper available at faculty meetings, during his lunch break, and even at graduation ceremonies. A true artist, his works and work ethic, as well as, his philosophy on being an artist and an arts educator, have permeated the lives of those he worked with, taught, and mentored over the years. His legacy lives on through the Visual Studies programs, and through the creative lives of his colleagues and former students.”
