January 4 - April 3, 2022
From the Martin Museum of Art:
“Visit the Martin to explore work by artist and educator, John Harlan Norris. In his current
exhibition, Portrait Procedures, Norris explores countless variations of the all-too- familiar portrait.
The exhibition consists of four distinct series of works, each with its own title and conceptual framework. The four series are as follows: Occupants (2012-2015), Disintegrants (2015-2018), Interpolators (2019-2021), and Onlookers (2021-present). Each series explores alternative approaches to portraiture and investigates notions such as occupational identity, public persona, and technological anxiety. Visitors can expect a truly unique experience through Norris’s contemporary take on the portrait. Themes of social media, jobs, inner discovery, and outer masks confront the viewer and invite a conversation around our identity, the many ways we present ourselves, and how that changes through technology.

From the Artist
“For the past ten years, I have been engaged in an ongoing project that reinterprets the genre of portrait painting in order to speak about ideas of personhood in our current moment. By stretching the parameters of the genre and magnifying certain elements beyond their typical roles, I make portraits that investigate our rapidly changing sense of ourselves as forces such as technology, media, capitalism, and globalization present new challenges and possibilities.” – John Harlan Norris
