From the Austin Central Library:
“Olaniyi Rasheed Akindiya, also known as Akirash, is a Nigerian born artist based in Austin. His rigorous creative practice
reflects his enthusiasm for art and his passion for connecting to different cultures took him to many different parts of
the world. Once biochemist turned artist says, “I don’t take things for granted” when he was asked how purely joyful he
is when he talks about his art. His abundance of energy, appreciation for his opportunities and his gentle enthusiasm
holds his powerful, wealth of creativity. His passion is reflected in his interdisciplinary works that are often site-specific
and impermanent, inviting audiences to cherish the fleeting, transient moment. Austin Public Library presents Akirash’s
new exhibition, Fragilee – siwaju – tunto (Canceled – postponed – rescheduled). During the hit of COVID – 19
pandemics, artist witnessed the fragile infrastructure of the food supplies that left many people food insecure, leaving
those living on the edge more vulnerable than ever. Buying food and supplies for others, Akirash transforms his
experiences, observations and contemplations into a large-scale structure that looks like a small hut covered with
packages left from people that he helped. If there is anyone who hasn’t seen Akirash’s artworks yet, this is the
opportunity.
