July 2 - August 14, 2021
From the South Dallas Cultural Center:
“On July 2, 2021 from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. South Dallas Cultural Center’s Arthello Beck Gallery will host UNSPOKEN BURDENS, an exhibition of new works by artist Jeremy Biggers.
Painter, photographer and graphic designer Jeremy Biggers is a renowned visual artist and creator whose catalogue of work is a demonstration of vibrance and vulnerability. His pieces and projects range from series of full-sized intimate portraits, salt and peppered with theme and symbolism; to commercial works of remarkable scale for entities like Nike, Virgin Hotels and the Dallas Mavericks – works seen by the eyes, and held tangibly in the hands of truly innumerable persons. A visual artist whose hope is to establish trust with the viewer, Jeremy is a cultural staple and cornerstone in Dallas, TX., where his commissioned murals adorn neighborhood epicenters, major intersections and beloved businesses.
“Unspoken Burdens” seeks to analyze and bring the conversations surrounding Black male identity to the mainstream, by denouncing the one-sided archetypes and social constructs Black men are often assigned and challenging the viewer to envision and truly consider the selected subjects’ variable nuance and complexity as parts of the whole, in its stead.
“As Black men, there often isn’t space for us to talk about our insecurities,” Biggers said of the art and exhibition’s intention. “For me, I’ve had body image issues for years and felt like I needed to deal with it in silence. Upon realizing this wasn’t an exclusive experience to me, I realized that as Black men we often carry unspoken burdens because we have to be the rock for our families or professionally.”
Biggers echoes the feelings and sentiments of many that the combined pressure of Black men’s relationships with themselves and the world, and a constant threat of physical and judicial assault from our government and police, creates the void where hope goes to die. Black men are literally dying, in so many ways, unable to express themselves.
The “Unspoken Burdens” Exhibition will run from its opening ceremony on July 2 until August 14 at the Arthello Beck Gallery in historically Black South Dallas’ storied cultural center, right in the neighborhood where Jeremy Biggers was born, raised and nurtured into an artist and Black man.”
