MYSTIC LYON is hosting Recreational Aesthetics: How to Run a Gallery in a Refrigerator by artist and curator Emily Sloan. The workshop will take place on Sunday, December 22 at 2pm. Participants are asked to register at [email protected] where they will receive special instructions. This series is free to attend.
ABOUT RECREATIONAL AESTHETICS:
Recreational Aesthetics (2013) as a series of artist lead workshops has been funded in 2019 by a Let Creativity Happen Grant from Houston Arts Alliance and includes: Observational Drawing in the Neighborhood, a Naptist Convention and How to Run a Gallery in a Refrigerator.
Recreational Aesthetics takes inspiration for its name from Relational Aesthetics, a term coined and defined by French art critic Nicolas Bourriaud referring to art that is participatory. Recreational Aesthetics has similar traits with a particular focus on fun, play, improvisation, the experimental and happenings that expand our experiences of what art is. It’s also a tool for replacing expected “art speak” with unexpected art speak.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Emily Sloan is an artist, curator and educator. Her art practice has led her on many adventures including a faux burning house, Victorian lampshades on City of Houston lamp posts, messages on the ground out of mulch and debris, misting shade clouds made out of lampshades, Mobile Nap Deliveries, funeral wakes for the undead, baptisms out of a pick-up truck, an art gallery in a refrigerator, a neighborhood badminton club, founding the Fifth Ward Chamber of Commerce and opening Mystic Lyon–an art space in Houston’s historic Fifth Ward.
