“Like many others, artist Magaly Cantu and Jayné Valverde, spend most of their young adult life identifying and confronting what scares them most; Themselves. Second Skin is both an exploration into one’s own flawed mental health as well as an interpretation into the sub-conscious mind.
While both Cantu and Valverde’s share everyday experiences, through surreal perspectives, you can see the diversity within their work.
Jayné Valverde uses layered wood cutouts and shadows to interpret reoccurring dreams and one specific brush with death. The biomorphic shapes are paired with indistinct iconography to portray the chaotic and fleeting nature of dreams or perceived spiritual occurrences.
Magaly Cantu creates a fantastical world through a variety of mediums. She uses watercolor painting, printmaking and a video in order to convey a journey through mental illness. The narrative work and story like imagery expresses a difficult time, of being disassociated from reality.
Second skin is that external layer that can express many things. It can be a mask that you hide behind, a layer of protection and security, or cultural identity. At some point, that shield needs to be peeled off and examined, even if its raw and dirty underneath.”
