“Using arduous photography techniques and bold processes is no new concept for Shields. In this collection he often uses a large format, 8 x 10 camera to achieve the highest resolution. For printing, Shields explores the silver gelatin printing process to achieve maximum smoothness and a wider range of black & white tones, and also utilizes the almost-obsolete dye-transfer printing, which achieves some of the most vibrant color possible in the field of photography. Inspired by a Master of Photography, Shields tips his hat to Irving Penn’s infamous florals by creating a series of still-lifes with the truest reproduction of the flowers, due to the highly saturated colors.”
