The sixth century Chinese cave temples of Xiangtangshan, carved into limestone cliffs in the mountains of northern China, were once home to a magnificent array of sculptures – monumental Buddhas, flying deities, and crouching monsters framed by floral scrolls. The show brings together many of the most important Xiangtangshan sculptures from American and European museums, along with a recent cave-digitization project.
