Art Now: Contemporary Art Workshop - July 11
Learn about contemporary art in this workshop by recreating famous artworks. Participants will pick
from several modern art pieces and recreate them utilizing a variety of materials including sand, clay
and collage. They will also have the chance to learn about contemporary artists who have exhibited at
the Rubin Center, like UTEP Alumni Adrian Esparza, who uses string to create large-scale installations.
Teen Screen: Contemporary artist interviews from PBS’s Art 21 series on contemporary art.
Going Green Recycling Workshop: Recycle Your Old Magazines - July 18
Bring in your old magazines or use ours and we will show you how to turn them into fantastic pieces
of art. Participants in this workshop will learn how to create everything from wearable jewelry, functional bowls and decorative wall art.
Teen Screen: Wasteland, a documentary in which renowned New York artist Vik Muniz directs catadores (designated pickers of trash) to create large scale images of themselves out of trash.
Ceramic Workshop: Slabs, Coils and Pinch Pots - July 25
Participants in this workshop will be guided on a tour of our current exhibition, Claire Lippman:
Traces of Wind and Bone, and given a brief history of ceramics and pottery. We will then head over
to the ceramic workshop to begin playing with clay. Participants will learn the basic techniques of
working with clay, including pinch pots, coil building and slab work. We will be using air-dry clay so
participants will be able to take their creations home the same day.
Secrets of the Streets: Urban Art Workshop - Aug 1st
