August 15 - November 12, 2023
From the Art Museum of Southeast Texas:
“The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) will present KIM WILLARD: Efflorescence on view through November 12, 2023 in AMSET’s Café Arts series for local artists.
Kim was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, and attended Kelly High School before transferring to Charlton Pollard High School. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of Houston with a degree in Visual Communication and Graphic Design. Kim also attended the Glassell School of Fine Arts where she studied painting and photography, as well as attending classes at Lamar University to study photography and graphic design.
Kim will exhibit a new body of work that focuses on images of flowers taken with her cell phone and transformed through filters. She embraces the saying “the best camera is the one you have with you.” By manipulating the colors and backgrounds of her images, she creates surreal, over saturated images that assume a painterly quality. She has recently begun experimenting by adding hand-drawn white ink lines to the photographs after printing them.
Kim is inspired by many great artists, including Frida Kahlo, Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe, Salvador Dali and Kehinde Wiley. Her father, Harlan “Billy” Taft supported her artistic aspirations throughout her youth and young adulthood, encouraging her to pursue art academically. She hopes that visitors will be equally inspired by her own work to appreciate the beauty of nature around us. An opening reception will take place on Sunday, August 20, from 2 – 4 p.m. in the museum’s café. This event is free and open to the public with light refreshments. For more information, visit amset.org or call (409) 832-3432.”
