The Contemporary at Blue Star in San Antonio has announced an open call for its Berlin Residency Program.
The contemporary art space annually selects a cohort of four visual artists to spend nearly three months living and working in the art-centric German capital.
Artists living and working in Bexar County for at least the past 12 months are eligible to apply to the annual open call through Monday, February 10. Residency periods for the 2025-2026 cycle are July 15 through October 8, October 15 through January 8, January 15 through April 8, and April 15 through July 8, with the stipulation that applicants must be available for any of the periods.
The free application requires a CV, artist statement, letter of interest, letter of recommendation and a portfolio of 20 images. Additional eligibility requirements on the Contemporary’s application page.
Artists selected for the program will receive a $2,000 stipend to help with travel and living expenses, an individual live-work studio space in the Künstlerhaus Bethanien building alongside other working artists from around the world, inclusion in the internationally-distributed BE magazine, and studio visits from curators involved in the program.
Künstlerhaus Bethanien is located in the centrally-located Kreuzberg neighborhood near other galleries, restaurants and shops with easily accessible public transportation nearby.
The City of San Antonio’s Sister City Program facilitates resident travel to the nearby city of Darmstadt to meet with fellow artists and cultural leaders and visit cultural institutions, with an additional stipend provided for the trip.
As with past residents, artists selected for residencies will also give a public presentation about their time in Berlin after their return to San Antonio.
Those interested in learning more about the program from recent alumni are invited to attend the next Back from Berlin presentation by artists Theresa Newsome and Juan Carlos Escobedo, on Thursday, January 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Contemporary’s adjoining education space at 132 Blue Star.
