From the University of North Texas:
“The artists in this exhibition focus on presence from diverse perspectives of personal and collective histories. The artists create works in a state between awareness of their personal perspectives and larger understandings of space and time. These works juxtapose memory and history considering various contexts and motivations. The use of traditional printmaking techniques such as woodcut, intaglio, lithography, and screenprint, pair with the powerful sense of newness in these artist’s work. From creating sculptural prints, blending processes or media, to using digital fabrication tools, the artists in this exhibition are pushing the boundaries of printmaking. In Between Past and Presence explores the work of seven artists whose various themes find focus in the historical traditions of printmaking in relation to the histories of making and contributing to culture.
Alexander Gonzalez showcases advertising culture through humor and satire using comic strip characteristics. Jalon Isabell uses the motif of carnival attractions and personal narrative to speak on his African American upbringing. Jenkins McAlister depicts ordinary objects through a nostalgic lens, promoting awareness, mindfulness, and gratitude for the simple beauty of living. Jess Holmberg uses layers to examine the way emotions and objects accumulate. Kamryn Robins brings to light the unacknowledged relationships between America and its Black population. Lochlyn McClure addresses the ever-changing relationships between oneself, others, and the environment through the lens of memory and scientific research. Milah Williams explores forms of separation and connection in people’s lives.”
