“The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum announces their latest exhibition, Now of Now/14 Thought 14, celebrating James Surls’ 80th year with a single monumental sculpture. The UMLAUF is honored to present the work of Surls – one of the most preeminent living artists in the United States – with an opening that is free and open to the public.
On December 11th at 6pm, the UMLAUF hosts the free public opening of Now of Now/14 Thought 14. This evening features live performances from acclaimed musicians Ray Benson and Butch Hancock along with unbilled appearances from some of Donn’s Depot’s best two-stepping regulars. A welcome and introduction to James Surls by Executive Director and Curator, Katie Robinson Edwards, and an introduction to Ray Benson and Butch Hancock by Texas Cultural Trust’s CEO, Heidi Marquez Smith. The exhibition also features small artworks made in honor of Surls from noteworthy artists.
James Surls helped redefine Texas art in the 1970s. Now residing in Colorado, he is best known for his enormous public sculptures and evocative prints and drawings. His art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and belongs to the permanent collections of major museums and private collectors worldwide. Among his many accolades, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center, the Texas Medal of the Arts Award in the Visual Arts, Houston Artist of the Year, Texas State Artist in the Visual Arts, and the Living Legend Award.
Ray Benson is the frontman and founder of the world-renowned Western swing band, Asleep at the Wheel. For 50 years, Benson has overseen the release of more than 30 albums, countless tours, and numerous GRAMMY™ Awards.
Butch Hancock is acknowledged by peers and critics alike as one of the premiere singer-songwriters Texas has ever produced. In 1972, he co-founded the renowned alternative country supergroup, The Flatlanders, with his lifelong friends, Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. “
