December 9 - January 20, 2024
From Good Luck Have Fun Gallery:
“We’re excited to announce a show of new work from two Austin artists exploring the mythology of modern motherhood: Christine Garvey and Annie Miller: Care/Take at Good Luck Have Fun Gallery.
Join us Saturday, December 9th from 4pm–7pm for the opening reception or January 20th 6-9pm, for the closing reception.
In the exhibition, the artists explore the dialectical tension of the mothering body, its vulnerabilities, and the cultural expectations placed on mothers as primary caretakers.
Christine Garvey’s work explores ideas of power and ruin as it relates to motherhood. Her paintings reimagine Greek and Roman myths, reframing and reimagining contemporary motherhood. Garvey’s imagery addresses the unusual power that emerges when we become our most animate selves.
Annie Miller’s large-scale paintings distill images of her nursing body to its essential components, contemplating whether this gesture can strip away recognizable elements—reduce it to “pure” abstraction, or unveil its core “truth.” Rather than depicting the climactic fulfillment of desire and touch, Miller’s work alludes to the inability to fully realize these desires, offering a reflection on cultural expectations tied to femininity, fecundity, and aging.”
