November 6 - January 11, 2024
From Wright Gallery:
“Wright Gallery presents, PAST & PRESENT: Alternative Prints & Sketches, by Carlos Hernandez. The exhibition, on view November 6th 2023 – January 11th 2024, features the artist’s past and present printmaking, sketches and commercial music posters. Consistent through Hernandez’ work is his passion for music and graphic design. Influenced by Mexican folk art, the artist describes brightly colored imagery in his work such as skulls, skeletons, cowboys, and snakes as alternative with a “rock and roll twist.” The artist presents a lecture about his work at Wright Gallery on November 15th from 2:00 – 3:00 pm, with a reception to immediately follow: 3:00 – 4:30 pm.
The founding partner of Houston’s member-based printmaking studio and collective, Burning Bones Press, has a layered printmaking process involving drawing, digital photography, and collage of vintage materials. Hernandez studied at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design in 1992 before relocating to Houston for commercial work in graphic design. Exposed to printmaking in his studies at Texas Tech, he revisited his passion for printmaking as an opportunity to incorporate his graphic design knowledge. Hernandez’ prints can be found in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
