About the new exhibit “This and That” We are looking forward to our next exhibit ‘This and ” with Artist Lon Brauer. “When gathering work for a show one can curate around a theme, a genre, or a social message. Or…it can just be a hodgepodge concept of individual work that comes from a single source. This time we’ll go with the latter. It’s way more fun that way! A visual experience of paintings that have nothing in common. All are unique stories. And let’s call it ’This and That’ Lon Brauer About Lon Brauer Lon Brauer is an American artist of figure and plein air landscape. His work is firmly rooted in figurative themes with a strong emphasis on drawing. His subject matter ranges from the conceptual to the concrete. In his work he develops a strong foundation composition on which to hang the paint. The painting should be primarily about the paint itself as it describes subject. The way the paint is applied and manipulated speaks to the making of an image and drives the narrative – the emotional narrative. The theatre of the subject will speak for itself.
Born in 1955 Lon’s esthetic leans toward early 20th Century post-impressionism as well as the Golden Age of illustration. This coupled with a sprinkling of 1950s Abstract Expressionism results in a mash up of the traditional and the avant garde. Consider it a fruit salad of Eakins, Henri, Wyeth, and DeKooning.
They gave me crayons and paper early on and that opened the floodgates to creative mayhem. Representational painting is all about story. The narrative may be about the paint application, or it may be about the subject conveyed. Or… at best, a combination of the two. That is where I find myself right now. Choose a subject, then hang paint on it!
Figure, landscape, or still life…doesn’t matter. Just make it interesting and new! That’s the challenge. That’s my job.”
