From the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum:
“The City of San Benito’s Cultural Arts Department (CAD) is pleased to announce its latest exhibition at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum: Al otro lado / Going Across. This exhibition showcases Mexican artist, Javier Dragustinovis’s most recent exploration of the nuances of migration and borders. This exhibition highlights the crossing of food, music, and memory. Dragustinovis makes use of everyday artifacts to show the movement of culture and its impact on cross-border communities. Foodstuffs, like avocado and corn, and common materials (glass and concrete) are transformed into a visual representation of this dynamic. Al otro lado / Going Across guides viewers into the parallels between this relationship and that of immigrants with borders. Both questioning and healing, Dragustinovis creates a space for the viewer to inquire about their relationship to cultural migration. The migratory patterns of flavors and culture are expanded on in Dragustinovis’s use of his glass bottle installation series and serigraph prints of corridos. Through food and music, Dragustinovis invites the viewer into a communal experience not too distant from sharing a meal with your community to the soundtrack of an iconic Northern Mexico/ South Texas sound. This work consists of installations, video art, and printmaking which explores these concepts of border and migration. “This exhibition is an artistic response to the cultural fluidity of this border region. The work resonates with history using a very contemporary lens that is not divisive, on the contrary, it celebrates community” explains Aleida Garcia, the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum Director. Al otro lado / Going Across will run through to its closing reception on Saturday, October 21 st , 2023 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. The museum is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guided tours and in-person access are available throughout the exhibit dates, and virtual programming, such as video presentations, interviews, and virtual tours, will be available through CAD’s social media platforms.
