From La Mecha Contemporary:
“Alix Gaytan is a Mexican-American artist born in El Paso, Tx. She was raised in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and eventually, became familiar with the unique duality of border life between Mexico and the USA when she moved to El Paso, Texas to pursue higher education. She earned her BFA from the University of Texas at El Paso with a major in painting and a minor in printmaking. In 2022, she completed her MFA from the Pennsylvania State University with a concentration in painting and drawing. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including in Texas, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Currently, she lives and works in El Paso, Tx.
Gaytan’s current work explores the abject and its relation to irrational human behavior. She creates images of insect humanoids forever confined in constant fragmentation within chaotic atmospheres. These humanoids are born from body fragments with diverse mutations, surrounded by dysfunctional human organs and vascular systems. When fear and confusion are expressed through our bodies, they are violently transformed into something uncanny. Employing a combination of painting, drawing, and printmaking techniques, bodies and backgrounds coalesce into an attraction-repulsion frenzy. Her work offers a visual testament to the durability of the human mind and its never-ending metamorphosis.”
