From Cluley Projects:
“In her newest body of work, Brazilian American artist Mônica Lóss debuts fiber sculptures and textiles that— through material experimentation—examine the changing nature of bodies across cultures and environments. Repurposing clothes from thrift stores and donated by Latin American women immigrating to the United States, Lóss excavates a narrative richness from discarded and/or treasured fabrics. Her jewel-toned, free-form compositions combine techniques of sewing, weaving, crochet and embroidery into shapes that resemble bacterial colonies and fleshy growths. Once adorning others’ bodies, Lóss’ materials become bodies in themselves.
Frequently drawing from the artist’s personal experience with transcontinental migration, the textile sculptures demonstrate Lóss’ relationship to travel and environmental change. Born in the southern Brazilian state of Soledad, Lóss has traveled to Santa Maria, Brazil, Barcelona, Michigan, Dallas, and California, where she currently lives. As she travels, Lóss picks up stories and items left behind by other migrants: her sculptures collage these elements into plush histories.
Offerings brings together two series of interconnected work, expanding Lóss’ experimentation with textured surfaces to elicit a tactile response in the viewer. Her sculptures of varying sizes are made up of interwoven fabric tubes decorated with monochromatic beads, tassels and rouching. Through physical manipulation, Lóss constantly explores new configurations for her sculptures: through movement her work is made new again and again. Alongside her wall textiles, Lóss’ sculptures recall the emotive friction of touching, moving and (eventually) letting go.“
