April 7 - 30, 2023
From Mercury Project:
“Texas artist David Alcantar will be presenting another portion of his years-long Superman Project at Mercury Projects’ art gallery for the month of April, 2023. This exhibition is a partial culmination of his research about how societal negotiations surrounding power have defined American heroism, and vice-versa. The iconography of Superman is used as a tool of investigation because of the overwhelming overlap of the mythologies of both Superman and America, highlighting questions about America’s identity, political power, military policy, immigration policy, and its supposed constitution to moral righteousness, to name a few. Like all of Alcantar’s work, this exhibition is about negotiation. The specific question here is: what do we gain by acknowledging the human limits of heroism and what do we concede by holding onto our desire for saviors?”
