February 16 - April 9, 2023
From the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts:
“Thanks to a recent insurance settlement, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will soon begin the work of replacing its iconic roof, which was damaged in a 2020 hail storm. Exhibits will be on display in Fort Concho’s Quartermaster Gallery from February 16 to May 30. Education programs, Concho Clay Studio programming, and Oakes Street galleries will continue as usual. The museum is grateful to Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, which has donated the use of its Quartermaster Gallery for SAMFA’s exhibits through May. The Quartermaster Gallery was the original home of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, from the time the museum opened to the public in 1985 until the completion of the present museum building in 1999. The museum will celebrate its return to its old home with a 1980s-themed party/exhibit opening, February 16 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., during Downtown Stroll. The event is free and open to the public. Local radio station KCSA is planning a special 1980s broadcast in conjunction with the event. The exhibit opening on February 16, Take a Closer Look, will feature a dazzling display by two cutting-edge Texas artists: Printmaker/sculptor Orna Feinstein and painter/sculptor McKay Otto. The works will remain on display through April 9. Feinstein’s work is inspired by the organic and geometric in nature. She continues to investigate the printing processes using various surfaces, such as fabric, paper, concrete and Plexiglas. These experiments led her to create major sculptural installations and prints that move beyond the flat surface of the paper. Her most notable innovative approach to printmaking resulted in 3D monoprints that create depth as well as an illusion of optical movement. McKay Otto’s paintings and sculptures aim to transcend time and space. The artworks reveal themselves differently in differing lights and in the dark, retaining their glow and adding another intriguing layer to the work. Reveling in the beauty of the possibilities of the artistic expression, Otto says, “The work is obsessed with the expression of color, light, and the way we perceive these things.”
In addition to the replacement of the copper roof of the main museum, interior repairs and some remodeling are planned. Museum staff are currently working on the logistics to pack and move the entire art collection (around 2000 objects) to a secure location before the work can begin. The main museum will be closed while this work is going on, but the adjacent Oakes Street galleries and Concho Clay Studio will remain unaffected. The museum is supported by generous contributions from both individuals and businesses. The upcoming exhibit is made possible in part by the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council and the Texas Commission on the Arts. SAMFA’s Fort Concho hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, 1 pm to 5 pm. Admission will remain free.”
