From the Houston Museum of African American Culture:
“Afi Ese’s Flights from Antiquity engages viewers on multiple levels. She uses narrative Black portraiture to make us probe generational senses and connect with the past, insisting that an historical self-engagement defines and empowers individuals and communities in the contemporary world. “Flight” also references the fight for lost history stolen from the African continent, like the recent return to Egypt of an ancient wooden sarcophagus from Houston. Finally, “Flight” allows us to see Ese’s use of conceptual narrative portraiture to encounter the past from a perspective of power. Flights from Antiquity is generously supported by Eric and Annette Mullins, Roberta Burroughs and the Board of Directors of the Houston Museum of African American Culture.
