From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston:
“The Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková will give at an artist talk as part of the programming surrounding the exhibition “Libuše Jarcovjáková: The Photographer as Dissident.” The exhibition features work drawn from more than 900 photographs of Prague’s T-Club, made between 1983 and 1985, by the acclaimed Jarcovjáková. The T-Club was one of Prague’s two LGBTQ+ clubs during the 1980s and Jarcovjáková’s work documents life of a historically marginalized community living under an oppressive regime. The exhibition and talk are sponsored by the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston. They are part of FotoFest’s Participating Spaces program. FotoFest is one of the world’s largest photography festivals. The talk will be held on October 16th at 1:00 p.m. Jarcovjáková will share reflections on working as an artist under Communism, the evolution of her approach to photography, and the body of work featured in the exhibition. She will be participating via livestream from Prague. Though she’s been praised in the pages of such publications as the Guardian, Aperture, Le Monde, and the New York Times, and exhibited at major galleries and museums throughout Europe “Libuše Jarcovjáková: The Photographer as Dissident” represents the artist’s first major U.S. show. “It reveals her to be both observer and participant, a radical idea in photography in 1970s Czechoslovakia; one that in the 2020s is mainstream,” says exhibition co-curator and Professor Emeritus of Photography and Visual Communication at Michigan State University, Howard Bossen. “Unitarian Universalists have a long history of social justice work. We are proud to give a venue to this exhibit celebrating the LGBQT+ community especially at a time when it is under attack,” said exhibition co-curator and Senior Minister of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston, Colin Bossen. The exhibition runs September 24th to November 6th and is on view Monday through Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday through Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be a critics panel on October 22nd at 1:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
