From San Jacinto College Central Gallery:
“As a participating space with FotoFest Biennial 2022, the San Jacinto College Central Gallery is pleased to present the work of Houston based artist Brian Ellison.
Dear Black boy,
I hope you have the freedom to color with all the colors in your coloring box. I pray you never inhale the stench of racism and the restrictive norms that work hard to steal away your adolescence.
Dear Black boy,
Know that you are not a statistic. You are infinite, like possibility wrapped up in the start of a new day. Don’t shrink or cower to accommodate the fear of the status quo, your body will soon tire from that burdening performance. Stand tall and embrace the power of your blackness.
Dear Black boy,
The world will always remind you that you are indeed a black boy, but please don’t forget to remind them that you are human too.
Brian Ellison is a philanthropist, photographer, cinematographer and conceptual visual artist. Brian believes there is no limit to self-expression and that art is a universal language that can be the catalyst for healing. Through his lens, Brian documents the everyday Black experience such as gentrification’s impact on historical communities, under-publicized Black love and comradery, parenthood, racial injustice in the education system and the persistent courage of Black women and men.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma he earned a BA in Sociology at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, an MA in Counseling at Prairie View A&M University and is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of Houston.”
