From Rice University Solar Studios:
“Feral Atlas at Rice University Solar Studios is a presentation of the online digital humanities project of the same name, Feral Atlas. This project engages with the concept of “feral” objects – entities borne out of interaction between nature and human infrastructure projects that exceed human control. Jellyfish polyps thrive on ocean infrastructure; forests regrow after industrial logging; and carbon dioxide emerges from combustion engines to cause global warming. The exhibit prompts the viewer to decide: what is a good “feral” effect, and what is a bad one?
Each object is seen through transformational events through human history – Invasion, Empire, Capital, and Acceleration. Feral effects emerge from the physical and microbial violence of colonial invasion, the rationalizations and supply chains of capital, and the accelerating proliferation of nuclear energy, industrial fertilizers, and human populations. Feral Atlas experiments with overlapping effects of these ongoing historical moments.
The stories of each object are represented through mixed media work including specimens, visual art, sculpture, historical documents, plants, and other objects. This installation will be open to the public this spring and through the end of summer.”
