From the gallery:
“The show draws from two bodies of work by Lee Friedlander from his years of working in Texas : photographs of the the Big Thicket, East Texas from 1977 that were exhibited at the Texas Gallery in 1978 and photographs of Big Bend and the Davis Mountains from 1997-2004 that were exhibited at the Texas Gallery in 2005.
Friedlander has often worked in Texas and was one of the original photographers invited by Geoff Winningham to visit and give talks at the Media Center at Rice beginning in 1969.
In 1983, Friedlander, artist in residence at Lajitas resort, his wife, Maria, Fredericka Hunter and William F. Stern made a float trip down the Rio Grande through Santa Elena Canyon and Lee photographed the Chihuahuan desert landscape.
In the 90s and early 2000s Friedlander made excursions to West Texas to photograph the landscape of Big Bend and the Davis Mountains in the company of his fellow photographers, John Szarkowski and Richard Benson.”
